Dice and dice games date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps evolved from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is believed that Sir William’s paladins played Hazard during a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when exiled by the English, the French moved south and settled in southern Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was acquired from the name of the bad luck toss of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and across the nation. Most think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the modern craps setup. He appended the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he established the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
