Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps developed from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the birth of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is believed that Sir William’s horsemen wagered on Hazard during a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when banished by the British, the French headed down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is acquired from the term for the losing toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the nation. Most think the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the modern craps setup. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. Later, he developed the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
