Dice and dice games date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is only about 100 years old. Current craps formed from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. No one knows for sure the ancestry of the game, although Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s paladins wagered on Hazard during a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the English, the French moved south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is gotten from the name of the non-winning toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and across the nation. A good many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn created the current craps setup. He appended the Do not Pass line so players could wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he established the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
