Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps developed from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s soldiers played Hazard through a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when displaced by the English, the French moved down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is acquired from the name of the losing throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and across the nation. Many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the modern craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so players could wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he developed the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
