Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps come about from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the origin of the game, although Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William’s paladins wagered on Hazard during a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the English, the French moved south and found refuge in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is gotten from the term for the non-winning throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the country. A good many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the modern craps layout. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players can bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he designed the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
