Be smart, play smart, and master craps the correct way!
Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about 100 years old. Modern craps developed from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is believed that Sir William’s soldiers wagered on Hazard amid a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the English, the French relocated down south and located sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was derived from the name of the bad luck toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the country. A good many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn developed the modern craps setup. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so players can bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he established the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
