Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps evolved from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the birth of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s knights bet on Hazard amid a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when expelled by the British, the French relocated south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was gotten from the name of the losing throw of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and across the country. A few think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the modern craps setup. He created the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. Later, he invented the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
