Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps evolved from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is believed that Sir William’s soldiers bet on Hazard during a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when banished by the English, the French moved south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is acquired from the name of the non-winning throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and across the country. Many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the current craps layout. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he designed the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
