Dice and dice games date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps come about from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s soldiers enjoyed Hazard through a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the British, the French relocated down south and discovered refuge in southern Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is gotten from the name of the non-winning toss of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and throughout the country. A great many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the modern craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so players can wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he designed the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
