Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps formed from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, however Hazard is said to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s horsemen played Hazard through a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the English, the French moved down south and found safety in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was acquired from the term for the losing toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and all over the country. Many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the current craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players can wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he developed the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
