Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps formed from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s soldiers wagered on Hazard during a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the English, the French headed down south and found sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is derived from the name of the bad luck toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and all over the nation. A great many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn built the current craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so players can bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he developed the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
