Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Current craps developed from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, however Hazard is said to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s knights bet on Hazard through a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when driven away by the British, the French relocated south and found sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is acquired from the name of the losing throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and throughout the country. Most acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the modern craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. Later, he designed the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
