Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Current craps come about from the ancient English game called Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the origin of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s soldiers wagered on Hazard through a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when driven away by the British, the French headed south and settled in southern Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was gotten from the term for the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and across the country. A few think the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the current craps layout. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players could wager on the dice to not win.
