Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps come about from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the origin of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s paladins enjoyed Hazard amid a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when driven away by the English, the French relocated south and found refuge in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was derived from the term for the non-winning toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and across the nation. Many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the modern craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. Later, he established the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
