Be clever, play clever, and master craps the right way!
Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is just about one hundred years old. Modern craps evolved from the old Anglo game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s horsemen enjoyed Hazard amid a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the British, the French moved down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was derived from the name of the bad luck throw of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and all over the country. Most acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the modern craps setup. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he designed the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
