Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps come about from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is said to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s paladins enjoyed Hazard through a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when driven away by the British, the French relocated south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is derived from the name of the bad luck throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and throughout the country. A few acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the current craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to lose. Later, he created the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
