Be clever, play clever, and discover how to play craps the right way!
Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is only about one hundred years old. Modern craps formed from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for certain the birth of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s knights enjoyed Hazard through a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when banished by the English, the French relocated south and found safety in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is derived from the term for the non-winning toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the country. A great many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn designed the modern craps layout. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he established the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
