Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is just about a century old. Modern craps formed from the old English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, however Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s believed that Sir William’s soldiers bet on Hazard during a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when banished by the British, the French moved down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was gotten from the name of the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and across the country. A great many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the modern craps layout. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so players could wager on the dice to lose. Later, he created the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
