Be brilliant, play smart, and become versed in craps the proper way!
Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Modern craps evolved from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is said to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s paladins enjoyed Hazard amid a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the British, the French moved south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is gotten from the name of the non-winning toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the nation. Most consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn built the current craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. Later, he designed the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
